BREMEN - by Coach Gardner - Triton boys played against the Bremen Lions with great determination and strong character. Coach Gardner told the squad to play loose and go for any shots that could produce a winning combination as Triton was considered the underdog of the night. Triton #1 Doubles Zak Greer and Ethan Shively took that advice into their match as defeated Bremen 6-4 in the first set. The match was thrilling to watch with quite a large triton family fan base cheering as Zak was just a beast at the net and Ethan kept returning long lops shots at both corners that keep Bremen from being aggressive. Although they ended up losing in three sets, Coach Gardner believes that his doubles combination started to figure out their strengths and weakness as they played thru the season, and can be a different team with first serves going in and more communication.
The Triton single players were properly the most unfortunate players in the sectional semi-finals facing what Coach Gardner thinks are the 3 best single players in the Bremen Sectional this year. Triton #1 singles Caden Large played out his sophomore year against a veteran Mariano Deleon, he battled and fought to win a couple of games, after watching the Caden warm-up Coach Gardner could only pace the fenceline and wonder what the actual match would look like. Caden settled down and played his toughest opponent of the year and ended up with a bloody knee from the hard-hitting Mario. Damon Kuntz played very consistently as he has progressed nicely with groundstrokes and consistent first serve in. His match took longer than the scores reflected and took his opponent Max Varner to deuce a lot of the night, but just couldn't find another gear to win the game points when the opportunity knocked. First-year player Isaiah Vaca also a sophomore finished out his rookie season playing at # 3 singles, after also trying his hand at doubles. Coach Gardner felt like his spirit and athleticism might be better suited at singles play. Isaiah played a solid single player in Camden Hickman, Coach Gardner was pleased with Isaiah's singles play and feels like with a more consistent first serve and improved baseline game, Isaiah will be able to compete and win more matches.
